Ormston Stone Wall Restoration Project
The historic Ormston stone wall has framed Lattingtown Road for more than a century, serving as one of the Village’s most recognizable scenic and historic landmarks. Originally constructed as part of the estate commissioned by industrialist John E. Aldred and designed by the renowned Olmsted Brothers landscape architecture firm, the wall was built from Manhattan schist excavated during the construction of New York City’s subway system and capped with bluestone. Stretching along Lattingtown Road, Peacock Lane, and Beach Drive, it remains a contributing feature of the Ormston property, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Ormston, which is currently owned by the Order of St. Josaphat, continues to define the Village’s rural character. In recent years, however, the wall has suffered extensive damage.
To restore this irreplaceable landmark, the North Shore Land Alliance is partnering with the Lattingtown Conservation Society, the Village of Lattingtown, St. Josaphat’s Monastery, and members of the community to reconstruct the damaged sections using original stone wherever possible and traditional masonry techniques. Improvements will also include removing the fallen tree and coordinating with utility providers to reduce the risk of future damage. Your tax-deductible donation to the North Shore Land Alliance will help preserve this iconic feature of Lattingtown’s landscape and ensure it remains a lasting symbol of the community’s history, character, and pride for generations to come.
