North Shore Land Alliance is a member-supported conservation organization that works cooperatively with private landowners and local communities to conserve natural areas. Over the past 22 years we have protected more than 1500 acres of land featuring a variety of habitats from fields to forests and wetlands to farmlands.
We hope you will enjoy, appreciate and explore some of Long Island’s most treasured places.

Cordelia H. Cushman Preserve
Size: 12 acres
Trails: 0.5 Miles – Easy
Location: Off Route 25A, Oyster Bay Cove
Description: Mature hardwood forest comprises nearly 100 percent of this pristine 15-acre preserve. Chestnut and white oak trees dominate the canopy with some maple, beech and tulip trees making a presence as well.

Cushman Woods
Size: 28 acres
Trails: 1.2 Miles- Moderate
Location: Still Road, Matinecock
Description: This hilly, 28-acre forest is brimming with big trees and boasts an intricate trail system that was once a popular fox-hunting route for the Meadow Brook Hunt, from the late 1800s.

Fox Hollow Preserve
Size: 26 acres
Trails: 1 Mile – Moderate
Location: Route 25A near White Oak Tree Road, Laurel Hollow
Description: This beautiful 26-acre preserve contains an unusual variety of distinct forest types that feature a diversity of oak, beech and other hardwoods; white pine woodland and shrub layers dominated by mountain laurel and maple-leaved viburnum.

Hope Goddard Iselin Preserve
Size: 42 acres
Trails: 1.3 Miles – Easy
Location: Chicken Valley Rd, Upper Brookville
Description: A beautiful hardwood forest, a white pine plantation planted in the 1930s and a colorful meadow comprise these 42 acres that are a popular refuge for people and wildlife alike. As you enter the preserve, make sure you stop at the kiosk to scrape your boots on the boot brush to minimize spread of invasive plant material.

Humes Preserve
Size: 25 acres
Trails: 1.5 Miles – Moderate
Location: 349 Oyster Bay Road, Mill Neck
Description: The property consists of meadow, woodland and freshwater wetlands and includes preserved land owned by Nassau County. The Humes Preserve is at the heart of a corridor of 150 contiguous acres of protected open spaces.

Macdonald Property
Size: 2.4 acres
Trails: No trails at this location
Location: Underhill Road, Locust Valley
Description: MacDonald opened to the public in 2025. Enjoy the sound of pollinators buzzing through the pocket meadows, relax on the benches of picnic tables and in summer enjoy the fresh fruit from the recent blueberry enclosure and Asian pear tree that dates back to the MacDonald family’s stewardship of the property

Matheson Meadows
Size: 38 acres
Trails: 0.6 Miles – Easy
Location: Fort Hill Drive, Lloyd Harbor
Description: Matheson Meadows is a 38.31-acre meadow surrounded by residential homes. The meadow has a mix of wildflowers and woody shrubs/trees. There also stands a small community of locust trees straddling a border with one of the neighbors.

Red Cote Preserve
Size: 30 acres
Trails: 1.15 Miles – Easy
Location: Yellow Cote Road, Oyster Bay Cove
Description: This 30-acre property boasts a beautiful mix of woodlands and sweeping meadows. White pine dominates the woodland area in the southern part of the property while a mixed deciduous forest with some large oaks occurs between the fields and in the forest on the eastern side of the preserve.

Shore Road Sanctuary
Size: 8 acres
Trails: 0.25 Miles- Easy
Location: Shore Road, Cold Spring Harbor
This 8-acre parcel in Cold Spring Harbor was once an ExxonMobil fueling site. It has been transformed into a thriving grassland preserve boasting a beautiful shoreline, salt marsh and wet meadow where you will find standing water after rainstorms and ice in winter.

Roosevelt Community Garden
Size: 10,000 Sq. Ft.
Plots: 40 raised-beds
Location: 59 E. Fulton Ave, Roosevelt
Description: The Roosevelt Community Garden, established in 2018 by the North Shore Land Alliance and Nassau County, provides community members and visitors of all ages and backgrounds with the opportunity to grow and harvest organic produce. If you plan to visit the Garden, please contact the Land Alliance.

Wawapek Preserve
Size: 32 acre
Trails: 0.3 Miles – Easy
Location: 3 Mowbray Lane N, Cold Spring Harbor
Description: Perched above the historic hamlet of Cold Spring Harbor, this stunning 32-acre preserve at one time was being considered for development into thirteen house lots. Mature hardwood forest, which comprises over 60 percent of the preserve, protects air quality and provides erosion control throughout its steep ravines.

Williams Ridge
Size: 4.2 acres
Trails: 0.2 Miles – Easy
Location: 357 Lattingtown Road, after St. Johns Church, Locust Valley
Description: The meadow, one of several features of Williams Ridge, is perched above a pond and overlooks the vicinity of St. John’s Church of Lattingtown. Adjacent to the meadow find our “Formal Garden” area, created to serve as a guide for visitors who want to add native planting areas to their properties or replace their lawn.

Tiffany Creek Preserve
Size: 200 Acres
Trails: 2.8 Miles – Easy
Location: Sandy Hill Rd at Berry Hill Rd, Oyster Bay Cove
Description: A mix of ecological communities can be found on this spectacular parcel of land such as old growth woodlands and oak forest, extensive fields, freshwater wetlands and a large pond, the latter of which was acquired by Nassau County with Environmental Bond Act funding.

Schiff
Size: 5.7 acres
Trails: 0.25 Miles – Easy
Location: Foxfield Lane, Oyster Bay Cove
Description: The 5.7-acre Schiff property is located at the end of Foxfield Lane in Oyster Bay Cove. It consists of predominantly forested land surrounded on three sides by Tiffany Creek Preserve. No designated parking is available at this preserve. Please contact the Land Alliance if you plan to visit.

Smithers Connector Parcel
Size: 12 acres
Trails: 0.25 Miles – Easy
Location: Beaver Brook Road, Mill Neck
Description: The property begins at the spillway at Upper Francis Pond and runs along Beaverbrook Road past Lower Francis Pond and ends just across from the Shu Swamp Trail.
