This 4.5-acre preserve was protected in 2022 through the generous donation of the Williams family, who spent many hours enjoying and stewarding these beautiful surroundings throughout the years they lived here.
The wooded hillside is graced with majestic American sycamore, tulip and oak trees, dense stands of Rhododendron and mountain laurel and native groundcover. An old stone stairway still connects the lower part of the property to a fledgling meadow at the top. A historic formal garden is being converted to a native planting demonstration area that invites visitors to explore alternatives to lawn on their own properties.
Following habitat restoration launched in 2023, a variety of native shrubs, grasses and wildflowers blankets the lower part of the preserve from the pond to the wooded hillside, attracting dragonflies, pollinators and songbirds. The pond, at one time stocked with sunfish and bluegills, is also home to frogs, muskrats, large-mouth bass, wading birds and waterfowl.
Those of you who have not yet visited Williams Ridge are in for a treat when you do go! The location of the preserve entrance may require some explanation, so please contact us here at the office at 516-922-1028 so we can direct you.
