• Heritage Committee 2018 Cocktail Party

Heritage Committee 2018 Cocktail Party at the New Harvard Club The North Shore Land Alliance held its annual Heritage Committee cocktail party at the new Harvard Club Rooftop in New York City on Wednesday, June 20, 2018. The Heritage Committee is a community of bright and energetic young professionals, 35 and under, who not only love nature, but understand the importance of land conservation and the impact their actions will have on future generations. “It’s so important to us at the North Shore Land Alliance to involve the younger community in the work we do,” said Lisa Ott, Land Alliance President & CEO. “They are the future and we cannot shape the future of land conservation on the North Shore without their help and support.” Guests were served a delicious variety of passed hors d’oeuvres like juicy pork dumplings, spring rolls and crab cakes while enjoying the breathtaking views of Manhattan on this beautiful summer evening. The tapas table boasted an eclectic variety of dishes like an eggplant stew and our favorite: champagne flutes filled with gazpacho. Silent auction items included Billy Joel concert tickets, paintings by Michelle Stack and Mercedes Dorson, and a visit to the exotic Montauk Salt Cave West – a holistic spa in Huntington. Cathryn Bales, Carter Bales’s daughter, gave a wonderful toast thanking guests for attending the event and supporting the important work we do at the Land Alliance. She also coaxed guests in a humorous and heartfelt way to overbid on their silent auction items, which got a nice chuckle from the crowd. Thank you for all your support, Cathryn.

Guests enjoyed hors d’oeuvres and drinks and bid on Conservation News – Spring/Summer 2016 31silent auction items in a green setting that represents how a community can come together to create and protect open space. Prior to becoming a New York City Park, the Garden was once a market with fishmongers, poultry vendors and retail stalls and later became the site of the City’s only house of detention for women. After years of community pressure, in 1974, the then obsolete and troublesome facility was demolished and the site was transferred to the Parks Department under the care of a group of neighborhood associations and homeowners. Chris Hagedorn and DR Holmes, who spoke at the event, highlighted the importance of the Land Alliance and the need for Heritage Committee members to be involved in protecting an area where many of them grew up and others intend to make their future homes. D.R. also thanked his co-chairs and committee members and gave special thanks to The Hawthorn Gardening Company this year’s Heritage Committee sponsor. • Heritage Committee Third Annual Spring Social: An Evening in the Jefferson Market Garden in Greenwich Village

Heritage Committee Third Annual Spring Social:  An Evening in the Jefferson Market Garden in Greenwich Village On June 10th, more than 90 young professionals attended the third Annual Heritage Committee Evening in the Garden, held at the Jefferson Market Garden in Greenwich Village. Guests in attendance were young professionals interested in conservation and preserving the character and natural habitat of the North Shore of Long Island. The beautiful urban garden, a peaceful oasis in one of Manhattan’s great historic neighborhoods, was an excellent setting for individuals to learn about conservation and the mission of the North Shore Land Alliance. out just as guests arrived, and it remained clear and comfortable throughout the evening. Guests at the event enjoyed hors d’oeuvres and drinks in a green setting that represents the importance of protecting open space. The garden, adjacent to an ornate Victorian Gothic library, originally a courthouse, provides a resting place for migrating birds. There is a variety of flowers including dahlias, lupines, allium and roses, which grow on beautiful iron gates donated by Brooke Astor. Although there were concerns of inclement weather, the sun came out just as guests arrived, and it remained clear and comfortable throughout the evening. Attendees of the gathering listened attentively to Board Chair Carter F. Bales’ introduction to the mission of the North Shore Land Alliance and the importance of protecting open space for future generations. D.R. Holmes, Co-Chair of the Heritage Committee, was impressed by the level of interest in this year’s Evening in the Garden, saying “this amazing turnout is evidence of not only our committee’s zeal to build awareness for future generations, but also the unmet need for conservation that our generation is now witnessing firsthand.” He looks forward to cultivating a passion for conservation among young professionals at future Heritage Committee events.
