The Land Alliance proudly announces our second reaccreditation by the Land Trust Accreditation Commission (LTAC). This is a significant milestone that underscores our organization’s leadership in land conservation and its enduring commitment to best serving our community.
Of the 1,300 land trusts that operate across the country, only 450 have achieved accreditation – placing the Land Alliance among a select group of organizations recognized for excellence and accountability.
“Reaccreditation is a meaningful achievement for our organization,” said Board Chair Hollis Russell. “It reflects the dedication of our staff, board and partners, and affirms our mission to permanently protect Long Island’s natural and historic lands, waters and environmental resources. It also positions us to continue this work with strength, integrity and purpose well into the future.”
The LTAC’s rigorous process evaluates every aspect of a land trust’s operations, including governance, financial health, land transactions and long-term stewardship. As part of this comprehensive review, over 400 hours were devoted to completing an extensive, months’ long effort that entailed a detailed application and documentation process.
The application included compiling records on conservation projects, financial practices and stewardship activities, as well as demonstrating our adherence to national standards and best practices. The records also reflect the Land Alliance’s careful, transparent approach to working with landowners – guiding them through complex conservation tools such as land donations and conservation easements, including appraisal requirements, IRS regulations and nationally recognized standards.
“Accreditation is more than a seal – it’s a public demonstration of trust,” said Lisa Ott, President and CEO. “From our financial stewardship to the permanence of our conservation work, it confirms that we have the expertise and systems in place to protect the lands entrusted to us forever.”
The accreditation program is administered by the LTAC, an independent program of the Land Trust Alliance. Commission members include experts in land conservation and nonprofit management from across the country, ensuring a comprehensive and objective evaluation process.
