Plein Air Painting in the Preserve

Humes Preserve

Led by Warren Jacobson and Steph Mouw
Join the North Shore Land Alliance and two very accomplished local artists for a workshop of painting in the preserve. Warren Jacobson is a North Shore of Long Island artist and retired art teacher in the Old Bethpage School District and is a current Associate Member of the Pastel Society of America. Steph Mouw studied at the Cleveland Institute of Art and is a Signature-Master Pastelist member of the Pastel Society of America and is on the Board of Governors.
The workshop will begin with a welcome and overview in the Margaret Sullivan Education Annex followed by the painting session in the Humes preserve.

Work Materials Needed
- Easel setup and/or a camp chair and a rigid board to rest on your knees if seated.
- Your painting medium of choice (oil, watercolor, pastel, gouache, charcoal, markers, pencil, etc.), along with brushes, solvent, etc.
- Something to paint on: canvas or paper attached (taped or clipped) to a rigid board, foam core board and gatorboard are both lightweight and rigid enough to paint or sketch on.
- Other Paper towels or rags
- Sun hat with a large brim, sunglasses, sunscreen, bug repellent, protective clothing, sturdy comfortable shoes – as we may be walking on trails
- Nitrile or latex gloves – if you don’t want your skin to come in contact with the paint
- Snacks, water, etc.
- You may want to bring a small sketchbook and pencil (to work out your composition)

Artist Bio’s:
Steph Mouw (b. 1960, Cleveland, Ohio) began her art training in a 2-year vocational commercial art program in high school. She went on to study at the Cleveland Institute of Art, where she received a solid foundation in drawing, painting and design. She works predominantly in soft pastel from direct observation to create compelling paintings. Steph is a Signature – Master Pastelist member of the Pastel Society of America and is on their Board of Governors. She is a juried member of New York City’s storied Salmagundi Club, where she serves on the Art Committee. She is a Signature Member of the Connecticut Pastel Society and an Associate Member of the American Impressionist Society. Her paintings have been juried into many national and international shows and have received numerous awards, including the Terry Ludwig Pastel’s Award at the 2022 Pastel Society of America’s 50th Annual Exhibition: Enduring Brilliance! and the Medal of Honor for Pastel at the Catherine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club’s 122nd Annual Open Juried Exhibition. Steph’s work has been exhibited at the National Arts Club (New York), the Salmagundi Club (New York) and the Butler Institute of American Art (Ohio). The Pastel Journal Magazine did a feature article on her floral paintings in the June, 2020 issue. Steph, her husband Bruce, and their cat Charlie live on the north shore of Long Island, NY.
Warren F. Jacobson
Warren has recently retired as an Art Teacher in the Plainview – Old Bethpage School District after 27 years, teaching AP 2D and 3D Studio ,AP Photography, and Drawing. Additionally, he led the Summer Special Education Art Program at Plainview –Old Bethpage School District for 20 years, focusing on therapeutic art activities for children 6-21 years of age, supporting a 12-month educational and mindfulness curriculum. While studying for his master’s in art education at Columbia, Warren worked for two years as a special education classroom teacher at the Stephen Gaynor School on the upper West Side of NYC. Warren has also worked in the film industry as a producer and set designer in California and New York.
Warren currently works as a fine artist on the North Shore of Long Island. He is represented by Gabba Gallery of Los Angeles where he was included in Remix-the Art of Music Group Show sponsored by Matt Sorum of Guns and Roses, Jane Lynch and Shepard Fairey, in support of “Adopt-the-Arts for Los Angeles Public Schools. He had a one-man show entitled HOMELAND also at Gabba gallery in September 2019. He has also exhibited at the Locust
Valley Library, Locust Valley NY, and most recently at the Bayville Library, Bayville NY. Warren is a current Associate Member of the Pastel Society of America, and he is a member of the Pastel Society of Tampa Bay.
