  • WILDLIFE CONSERVATION TALK Cold Stunning & Other Challenges Facing Aquatic Mammals

Cold Stunning & Other Challenges Facing Aquatic Mammals

Wildlife Conservation Talk Cold Stunning & Other Challenges Facing Aquatic Mammals Thursday, October 16, 2025, 4 PM Education Annex, Humes Preserve 349 Oyster Bay Road, Mill Neck Guest Speaker: Steve Abbondondelo, New York Marine Rescue Center Cold stunning is a condition similar to hypothermia that is brought on when sea turtles, which are cold-blooded, are in water temperatures below 50°F. Since cold stunning is a condition that slows the movements of afflicted turtles, it causes the animals to get washed ashore on New York beaches. Left unnoticed, this condition can become fatal. This is why the New York Marine Rescue Center (NYMRC) needs your help! Two cold-stunned Kemp’s Ridley Sea Turtles were found at the Land Alliance’s Shore Road Sanctuary last fall. Join us for this program to learn more about cold stunning and other challenges local marine animals face and what we can do to help them. The sooner these animals are found and reported to the New York Marine Rescue Center, the higher their chance of survival! Online registration will begin two months before the event! To stay updated, join our email list and we’ll notify you when registration opens. Space is limited to 25 participants. This event is free, but advanced registration is required!  After you have registered, but before the event, we will email you to confirm your attendance and provide more detailed information.  If you are unable to attend, please contact us, as this will help us register those on the waiting list.
