Hike Big Reed Pond Nature Preserve
Hike Big Reed Pond Nature Preserve Saturday, October 12, 2024, 11:00 am Big Reed, Montauk Co-listed with Long Island Botanical Society Led by Vicki Bustamante Big Reed is the jewel of the 1,100-acre Montauk County Park and host to many rare and unusual plants. The hike will pass through some vulnerable ecological communities including a red maple-blackgum swamp, coastal oak-hickory forest and a coastal oak-beech forest. We will overlook Big Reed pond, a pristine 57-acre coastal plain pond without a house, building or road in sight. The area was the last ancestral home of the Montaukett tribe. We will be on the lookout for interesting plants and birds along the way. Registration will be available as the date approaches. This event is free, but advanced registration is required! Before the event, we will email you to confirm your attendance and provide more detailed information. Explore the use of native ground covers as an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional mulch. Native ground covers enhance biodiversity, foster ecosystem health and minimize long-term maintenance. Missy will demonstrate the best practices for adding this crucial layer to all areas of the landscape, from sun to shade, wet to dry, foundation plantings, garden beds and natural areas.
